Early Intervention Program

The Bay School's (TBS) Early Intervention program for toddlers with autism and developmental delays employs the latest research findings to produce measurable and lasting improvements in the lives of children with autism. High levels of consistency, individually selected and strategically used motivators, careful use of prompting procedures and systematic planning for generalization are used to establish and maintain a positive learning environment. Although the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) guide our programming efforts, each toddler is seen as unique. We recognize that flexibility must be exercised to create an environment that allows for the most effective teaching.

Our ultimate goal is to facilitate the student's successful transition into public schools.

Additional features of TBS Early Intervention program include:

Teaching modifications are documented. If a child goes for an extended period without making measurable improvements, the teaching procedures are updated to improve the programming.

Highly qualified staff. The Bay School Early Intervention staff members all have extensive experience working with children with autism. Supervision of the program is conducted by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with years of experience implementing behavioral treatments for children with autism. Program staff members are required to participate in weekly training sessions on autism, behavior analysis, and child development.

A strong emphasis on Parent Training. The TBS Early Intervention program emphasizes parent and caregiver training. Parents, care givers, siblings, and other professionals (identified by the parents) are given instruction both formally and informally on all aspects of their child's programming, enhancing their ability to recognize and respond to their child's individual characteristics, temperament and socialization needs. During weekly 1-hour parent training sessions, 2 TBS staff members work with both the parent and the child. Using the “bug-in-the-ear” technology, The Bay School teacher coaches the parent or caregiver on how best to interact with the child from behind a one-way mirror while the parent interacts with the child. This unique, focused parent training component enhances the parents' and care givers' skills.

Caregivers listen, observe and receive feedback on what works for their child.

Group parent training sessions. Group parent training sessions, designed to teach child development and parenting skills for children with autism, are conducted approximately once a week. Topics include positive parenting, toileting, feeding, sleep disturbances and information for parents about the special education system.

Weekly Home-based services. TBS staff members go to the home to evaluate the parents' implementation of the procedures developed at the school. Data are collected on how the parents implement the programs. Positive and corrective feedback regarding implementation of the procedures is given to the parents. Difficulties related to implementing the procedures in the home are addressed in subsequent school and home visits.
